Humus Overview

François D'Aoust and Mélina Plante cultivate their plot of land in Montérégie by having a minimum of human intervention — allowing natural fertilization to occur through the work of insects, bacteria and other living organisms present in the soil. Their experience attracts farmers from across the province. But despite all their efforts and good will, François and Mélina, who have two young children, are overtaken by the consequences of climate change, including the earliest frosts they’ve ever experienced, which destroys a good part of the harvest. In 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic allows François and Mélina to realize their dream of living together on the farm, alongside farmers and friends who share their ideal, but illness and labor shortages make their work increasingly demanding.
