Caravaggio - The Soul and the Blood

The documentary offered no new insights and furnished almost no context to illustrate the world in which Caravaggio moved. It’s just a retelling of one of the dominant narratives of western art: tortured genius paints religious subjects using prostitutes and patrons as models. But with a whole bunch of navel-gazing monologues set over boring art-y video montages of modern character in modern settings, attempting to illustrate the documentary’s main thesis... “Caravaggio’s chiaruscuro is a reflection of his own lightness/darkness”. Yawn. Lots of beautiful photography of actual paintings and one or two brief, but interesting, references to his process gives it two stars.

Informative and well narrated. I personally did not like the contemporary " inserts". The opening scene was unnecessary and horrific. The details and history of the paintings and artist are what I went to see. The acted rest was redundant.
